Exercise is important for overall health, even more so if you have undergone surgery. Exercising after a hip replacement is important because it helps prevent the buildup of scar tissue that can restrict motion. An important goal of hip replacement is to restore range of motion and mobility to hip joints that have been damaged by arthritis or injury. You certainly do not want a new hip joint to be stiff and limited in range, so you need to move it and engage it in light exercises.

In addition, the muscles can weaken as a response to surgery, and exercises help with gradually restoring the strength of the muscles and bringing you back to your pre-surgery condition. Lastly, exercise is also a preventive measure against other postoperative complications, such as blood clots, because it maintains circulation.

Exercises To Do After a Hip Replacement

The exercises recommended for hip replacement patients are low-impact so as not to dislocate or injure the new hip. Below are some examples of exercises that are safe for hip replacement patients:

  • Ankle pumps
  • Quadriceps sets
  • Gluteal sets
  • Heel slides
  • Short arc quads
  • Seated knee flexion and extension
  • Walking – start by walking five minutes a day and gradually increase the time as you get more comfortable

Physical therapy programs are designed in such a way that you progress through stages as you become stronger, more flexible, and mobile. Remember to always listen to your body and stop if you experience any pain.

Exercises To Avoid After a Hip Replacement

It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions on what movements and exercises to avoid in order to protect your new hip. Avoid doing the following:

  • Crossing your legs
  • Lying on your stomach
  • Bending your hip too far down
  • Lifting your knee too high or doing leg raises
  • Jumping jacks
  • Crunches
  • Squats
  • Lunges

As common hip replacement surgeries are, it doesn’t mean your needs are not unique. To be completely safe, consult your doctor or physical therapist before starting any exercise program. If in doubt, always check with your doctor first.
