Our Specializations: Conditions and Procedures
Arthritis
"Inflammation of a joint" is the literal meaning of the word arthritis. Though it takes several forms, arthritis can be a serious disability that interferes with your work and your personal time. It is mostly found in adults, though children can also have it.
In most cases, medication, therapy and proper exercise can reduce arthritis symptoms by decreasing joint stiffness and controlling arthritis-related pain. However, when these treatments fail surgery is also an option. Orthopaedic surgery can be used to remove damaged joint areas, realign or replace joints, or fuse joints together to prevent joint motion and reduce pain.
Please see us if you suspect or know you have arthritis. We can help you manage your pain and reduce your symptoms. Untreated, arthritis can constantly interrupt your life. With the proper medicine and procedures, however, many types of arthritis can be managed.
Arthroscopy/Arthroscopic Surgery
Orthopaedic surgeons use the procedure called arthroscopy to examine, diagnose and hopefully treat joint problems. An arthroscopic surgery involves the doctor making an incision in your skin and inserting small instruments containing a small camera and lighting system. By attaching these devices to a television or computer screen, doctors can do a full examine of your joints without having to perform an extensive surgery or create large incisions.
Recovering from an arthroscopic surgery usually occurs quickly, with patients resuming full activity within a few weeks, but returning to simple activities like work the next day. However, because arthroscopy is a diagnostic surgery, your ongoing condition may require more surgery or treatment and involve a longer recovery process. Every case is different.
At Midwest Orthopaedics, we have doctors on staff who are experienced with leading technologies like arthroscopic surgery. We strive to diagnose and treat your joint conditions without a more invasive surgery if possible.
Adult Hip
The hip can suffer from femur and pelvic fractures, dislocation and muscle strains. It can also be afflicted with conditions like arthritis, bursitis and Perthes. Treatments for hip problems can range from therapy to surgical hip replacement.
Our doctors are experienced at diagnosing and treating hip conditions. If you or someone you know is suffering with hip-related pain, please make an appointment and let us help.
Adult Knee
The knee comes under a lot of strain and as a result knee injuries range from strain and tears in the muscles that work with the joint to femur and shin bone fractures to chronic knee pain and arthritis. Knee treatments include casts for correcting fractures to complete knee replacement to resolve pain or trauma.
Knowing that the knee is a complicated but important joint, you need doctors who understand the full implications of knee procedures and are experienced treating knee conditions. Midwest Orthopaedics has doctors specialized in a range of knee issues. Please give us a call at (913) 362-8317 if you need treatment.
Foot and Ankle
Many foot and ankle problems can be successfully managed without surgery. Medication, physical therapy, orthotics, shoe modification, weight control, and modification of leisure/sporting activities are suggested. Your surgeon may recommend you try some of these approaches before you decide if surgery is necessary.
Other foot and ankle problems may require surgery to resolve longstanding joint pain or deformity. These procedures may help to slow down the damaging process or to structurally realign the foot and ankle and reduce abnormal stresses.
Many different types of surgical procedures are performed through Midwest Orthopaedics. Examples include the correction of bunion deformities, management of rheumatoid feet, ankle replacement, flat foot and high arched foot reconstructions, and treatment of diabetes related ulcers.
Fractures
Fractures, both partial and complete, refer to broken bones. Most fractures are the result of trauma, such as a car accident or an injury during an athletic event. However, osteoporosis and overuse can also cause bone fractures. X-rays will usually be used to diagnose a fracture. Treatment for fractures most often consists of using casts, splints or other devices to hold the bone in place so that it can heal correctly.
Broken bones should be seen by a doctor and treated to avoid having the bones heal in an incorrect position. We are bone experts at Midwest Orthopaedics, so come see us if you suffer a fracture.
Joint Replacement
Arthritis, age or trauma can cause damage to the point that a joint becomes difficult or painful to move. When that point is reached, joint replacement may be considered. Replacement is a surgical procedure that involves removing the joint and replacing it with an artificial one, known as a prosthesis. The artificial joint is designed to work just like the natural one, restoring movement and functionality.
Though joint replacement is considered only when other treatments will not ease the pain, our doctors are experts in joint replacement procedures. If you are suffering from chronic joint pain or know you need a replacement surgery, please let us help. Make an appointment to come see us.
Shoulder and Elbow
Sports Medicine
Athletes work hard and push themselves to the limits of the human body. Sometimes this can result in injury or pain, but Midwest Orthopaedics is here to ensure you get the treatment you need to resume your athletic activities. Basketball, baseball, football and gymnastics all contribute to minor and major injuries to the head, neck or extremities.
If you or a loved one has sustained a sports-related injury, please take caution and seek medical treatment. Particularly head and neck injuries can be extremely serious and require medical care, but even more minor conditions such as fractures should be seen by a doctor.
The doctors at Midwest Orthopaedics are trained specialists who know how to treat both major and minor sports-related injuries. Please make an appointment to come see us.
